St Patty's Day Drinks

You've heard that everyone's a little bit Irish on St. Patrick's Day. While we don't know if this is really true, we do know that Americans have been celebrating the Irish saint since 1737 in Colonial Boston. The pub crawls of yesterday have given way to smaller gatherings at home. Mix up one of these cocktails to celebrate this year!

Moorefield WV North Pole Express
It's hard to believe the holidays are just around the corner, but they'll be here before you know it! There are a lot of fun holiday events in or area, and our REALTORS® love helping residents find the most exciting ways to celebrate the season. One of our favorite activities is the Potomac Eagle's Country Classic Christmas featuring the North Pole Express.

Take a Train Ride with Santa

Hop aboard the train and ride the rails to the North Pole. Once onboard, there will be sing-along Christmas caroling with musicians and tasty milk and cookies. The most exciting part of the entire ride, however, is the SURPRISE you'll see on your kids' faces when the big guy himself climbs on board. That's right, SANTA will join you and your family for the ride. Not everyone can see him, though. He will only appear to those who truly believe!

The entire family will love hearing the endearing story of how a train saved Christmas. You'll also enjoy the stunning views as the train makes its way through the gorgeous countryside. After you experience this for the first time, you'll want to adopt it as a cherished family tradition that you can carry on for years to come.

Arriving at the North Pole from Moorefield

The North Pole Express runs each weekend from Friday, November 22nd until Sunday, December 22nd. Shows run at 3 p.m., 5 p.m., and 7 p.m. (check the schedule to confirm dates and times). This top-rated event will sell out, so you'll want to book your tickets as early as possible.

The train ride departs from Moorefield, which is a gorgeous place to live and work. You may want to plan to arrive a couple of hours early so you can drive around and take a look at some of the beautiful Moorefield homes for sale

Adults can purchase their tickets for just $35 during the day and $52 for evening rides. Children aged 2 to 12 years old are $25 during the day and $42 in the evening. Infants and children under two years old are welcome to ride your lap and are not charged. However, you will still need to reserve a ticket for each child who will attend.

Monterey Maple Festival
Monterey homes for sale
are some of the most desirable in Virginia, and our real estate agents have them. This town of only about 150 people is one of the state's best-kept secrets. It has a land area of only about a third of a square mile, yet it sees thousands of tourists a year.

How does such a tiny town attract so much interest from around the country?

Its many unusual traditions make Monterey a fascinating place to visit or live. One of the biggest and best local events that takes place every year is the Highland Maple Festival. Highland, of course, is the beautiful county where little Monterey is located.

If you're checking out local homes, you won't want to miss this unforgettable fun!

Bill Blose Memorial Scholarship
On Giving Tuesday, our team at Old Dominion Realty can find no topic more fitting than recognizing the work of the Bill Blose Memorial Scholarship Fund, founded in honor of a former member of our team. Bill Blose was a special man – father to seven girls, exceptional real estate agent, beloved friend, and a strong supporter of community initiatives. While Bill may have left us too soon, his memory and charitable spirit live on through the Bill Blose Memorial Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarship grants to local student-athletes each year. Our real estate agents are here to tell you more about the Bill Blose Memorial Scholarship Fund, and about memories of the wonderful man that the fund honors.

The Bill Blose Memorial Scholarship Fund Recognizes Spotswood High Senior Student-Athletes

"As your children are growing up you need to be their parent, not their best friend so that when your children become adults, you can be their best friend."

Bill Blose

While the scholarship fund is our primary focus in this post, our team can't help but think back to the memories of sharing an office with Bill Blose every day. According to Linda S. Goodson, Old Dominion team member and co-worker of Bill's:

"Bill was a gentleman who was a positive force, offering uplifting advice and support to everyone. He had a kind soul and a competitive spirit. He was one of a kind, and he is missed."

Harrisonburg Community Spirit this Holiday Season

6 Things We Love About Harrisonburg

It's the most wonderful time of the year, and Harrisonburg residents are finding more than enough ways to fill their calendars. With the holidays swiftly approaching, it's an excellent time to make memories and spend quality time with your loved ones. Our city makes it simple, and you'll find ample opportunities between now and the end of the year to celebrate. Here are six things to love about Harrisonburg at Christmas.

  1. Shop Local – Downtown Harrisonburg, VA is a treasure trove of shops. There's nothing like finding one-of-a-kind items or supporting locally-owned businesses while finding the perfect gifts for friends and family. Find ethical, fair-trade clothing at Green Hummingbird, outdoor accessories and gear at Walkabout Outfitter, or the perfect read at Downtown Books. Downtown Harrisonburg is home to over 45 unique shops. When you're done, take a break at one of the incredible eateries that Harrisonburg is known for—after all, the downtown was designated the first culinary district in Virginia.
  2. Make your Own Gifts – Another way to create lasting memories this holiday season is to make a gift. Harrisonburg has a few places that allow you to put your personal stamp on Christmas. Head to Larkin Arts to design your own wrapping paper (or to give the gift of art classes), or get the creative juices flowing at You Made It. If you prefer making holiday décor, visit the Edith J. Carrier Arboretum for their annual Festive Greens workshop on December 9th.
  3. Moonlight Carriage Rides – A beloved tradition in December in Harrisonburg is the Moonlight Holiday Carriage Rides. If you aren't able to get a reservation in time, individual walk-up rides may be available the day of. If you can't make it this December, there is always the full moon summer rides, or next year.
  4. Holiday Cultural Entertainment – It wouldn't be Christmas without carols and dance. Harrisonburg offers many opportunities to enjoy holiday entertainment. Two excellent options are the Rockingham Ballet Theatre's performance of the Nutcracker December 19th and 20th, and the Nothin' Fancy Holiday Show that will delight Bluegrass lovers at the Court Square Theater on the 12th.
  5. Christmas Tree Adventures – Start a family tradition that will last for years to come. There is nothing like the fresh scent of a recently cut Christmas tree to get you excited about the holidays. Harrisonburg has several tree farms nearby to choose from, and each has its own appeal. Try the Evergreen Tree Farm, The ELF Christmas Tree Farm, or Ostlund Christmas Tree Farm.
  6. First Night Harrisonburg – The holiday season isn't officially over until after New Year's Eve, and Harrisonburg, VA knows how to celebrate in style. First Night Harrisonburg is an all-inclusive event that brings together the community for live music, art, family-fun, and fireworks. It's one of Harrisonburg's most beloved annual events.

About Harrisonburg

Harrisonburg, VA is a dynamic community that offers residents an ideal location, four beautiful seasons, a wide variety of activities, and a rich lifestyle and culture. The eclectic city is full of year-round opportunities that make it an interesting place to live. You can enjoy the bustle of a thriving downtown, but still get the sense of a close-knit community. Team ODR Staunton Celebration

Old Dominion Realty's participation in the 2015 event is a "command performance" having taken part in previous years.  The Old Dominion Realty Team designed and created our holiday scene entitled, "I'll Be Home for Christmas." Special thanks to Debbie Fauber, Maria Ralston, Natalie Campbell, Krista Fields, Cathy Ward and their families who acted as Santa's helpers in organizing our presentation.

Remembering Your Loved Ones at Gypsy Hill Park

In celebration of loved one, a Veteran or "just because" you can place a lighted deer in Gypsy Hill Park's Field of Deer. During the 2014 Celebration of Lights, 124 deer were displayed by the pool at Gypsy Hill Park.

Honoring the Military

See rows of sparkling, spiral Christmas trees placed to honor those in our military. Thelma Newman, chairperson and founder of the Celebration of Holiday Lights, invited anyone interested to bring their trees to the park to be placed in honor of someone currently serving or a veteran.

Caroling, Cookies and Cocoa

Joining the Staunton Community

Organized by a group of Staunton's community citizens, the Celebration of Holiday Lights combines the local beauty of Gypsy Hill Park with a time of the year when friends and families typically come together.  Staunton has a growing reputation as a tourist destination and the event is another way to bring people to the city and show the true community spirit of its locals.
